It took seven years, but David Njoku finally broke out in 2023. His 81 receptions, 123 targets, 882 yards, and six touchdowns were all career highs. He finished as TE6 for the season. Most of his production came with backup quarterback Joe Flacco under center as opposed to Deshaun Watson. With Watson, Njoku averaged just 38.3 yards on 5.8 targets per game. With Flacco (and Dorian Thompson-Robinson), he averaged 65.2 yards on 8.8 targets per game. It was a relatively small sample size playing with Watson for only five games, but it's hard to ignore the gaudy stats he put up with Flacco as the signal caller. Not only are we back to Watson in 2024, but the Browns also decided to trade for Jerry Jeudy, a former first round pick with a lot to prove. Tight ends often take time to grow as receivers in the NFL, and that was the case with Njoku. We know what he's capable of, but it seems it'll be hard to replicate with more target competition and a less willing pocket passer under center in 2024. He's unlikely to finish inside the Top-6 tight ends again, but he still has a good shot of finishing as a low-end TE1 this season.
